Education and Experiences Required To Be a Librarian

Public Library Librarian:
  •         Master's degree and an undergraduate degree in Library Science or Information technology
  •      Not required to have experiences of being a teacher
High School Librarian:
  •          require a teaching certificate
  •          needs experience of being a librarian and a teacher
  •          A Master’s degree in Library Science
  Universities in Western Canada that offer a degree in Librarianship:
  • Grant MacEwan College: Information Management & Library Technology
  • University of the Fraser Valley: Library and Information Technology Diploma
  • University of Alberta: Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) program
  • Southern Alberta Institute of Technology: Library and Information Technology
  • Langara College: Library and Information Technology
  • University of British Columbia: Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) program
  • Red River College: Library and Information Technology

University of Fraser Valley : Library and Information Technology Diploma
  •          Can take to 2-5 years to complete
  •          Allows students to learn how to do complicated skills in this field and allows students to exceed in communication skills
  •          Need to be BC graduate
  •         Lab and technical courses
  •          Will cost 4700 dollars for tuition
  •          Credential is diploma and future jobs are library technicians

Grant MacEwan College: Information Management & Library Technology
  •          Two- year program
  •          Courses include INFM 101 - Libraries in the Information Age, INFM 103 - Reference Fundamentals, INFM 104 - Acquisition and Management of Collections, MGMT 107 - Business Computing, ENGL 111 - Communications or ENGL 102 - Analysis and Argument, INFM 152 - Information Services I, INFM 155 - Organization of Information I, INFM 210 - Information and Society, ENGL 103 - Introduction to Literature or  ENGL 211 - Business Communication, and a preferred Elective for first year
  •          Would cost 3572 dollars for one term
  •          Teaches students the skills needed for any profession in this field
