Library Science Final Project

Dear Rosa Liu (possible future Library Science student),

The course of Library Science has been delightful to take and it would be highly recommended to you if you enjoy helping others and learning about Library Science. As your senior who has already taken this course, I should introduce the responsibilities, experiences, and tips for success for being a great library assistant.

As a great library assistant, one of the most important parts of Library Science is to be an organized and responsible person who takes an initiative in their work. In this course, you are responsible for your own learning and the time spent in class for this course. Duties as a librarian assistant in this course is to be organized and help students with their small needs. In this course, you will also learn how to check in and out books. However, working at the front desk is quite fun and enjoyable. This course was relaxing and challenging at the same time as it can deal with technological components. There were some difficulties in some of the assignments that dealt with technological aspects. Some assignments that you might have in the future include creating your own book trailer. In this assignment, you are supposed to create a book trailer using one of the recommended sources that have been chosen already for one of the books that you have not read already. Allotted time for this assignment is 1 month because of the time that will be spent on reading the novel you have chosen. Some issues I had with the assignment were learning how to use the program properly, and inserting effects to make my book trailer more interesting. It took a while to learn how to use this program properly and get used it. There were some extreme issues that I even had to restart my first trial. The process of working on the book trailer took longer than a week. In other words, difficulties in this course was getting used to using new technological programs. However, I also had my own strengths in this course which was my helpful, and kind personality. I could easily help others with their concerns and what they needed for assistance. I kindly checked out and checked in novels for students who have visited the Learning Commons. I have enjoyed working with others, and helping others in this course because it is my nature to help others. In this course, I have disliked projects that have dealt with technology because I normally have trouble getting used to using computer programs I have not used before.

For tips to be successful in this course includes being  friendly with others, organizing books well, learning procedures thoroughly, knowing the alphabetical order, meeting deadlines on time, being organized, planning your time wisely, concentrating on your duties, being helpful towards others, and being creative. If you follow these tips, you will have no problem with this course, and would definitely bring you to success. Improvement with the Learning Commons include having more electrical outlets. More changing electric outlets could let more students charge their phones and laptops as they study. It would be troublesome for a student to have to change places to get to an electric charging outlet. Students would probably find it better if they were accessible to an outlet anytime. Also, it would be great to have more computers that have printing functions. I have seen people lining up printing pages and if there are more computers used for printing pages, printing procedures would be more efficient and students would have quicker access to printing out their work.

In Library Science 11, skills acquired are being able to check in and check out books and learning how to use programs that you have not used before. Fun technological projects or assignments are using the 3D printer. From taking 2 Tinkerine courses about 3D printing, I became more knowledgeable with 3D printing. From following the instruction booklet of using the 3D printer, my first trial was a success. The only concern is creating animation promotions videos or using a computer program that you have not used before. It takes a long time to get used to and some programs are not very user-friendly according to me. If you are even great with that, you will have no problem with the course. I wish you success and the best in your future library science course.

Lib Post # 12: 3D Printing

The overall experience of learning about 3D printing was really interesting and fun. The Tinkerine courses about 3D printing helped me discover more about 3-D printing and it was great  reading the descriptions about it. My experience of printing a cat ring was successful and it  was great learning how to use a 3D printer.

At first, I was really confused at how to use the 3D printer, and had some difficulties with the 3D printing software. I asked friends to help me print the object I wanted to print, and from following her directions and the instruction booklet, my first attempt of 3D printing was successful. The cat ring I was printing took shorter than I thought it was going to take so I wasn’t able to take a video of the printing process unfortunately. The object I printed out fits fell on my fingers and I find it really cool. Friends that have seen it have thought it was very cute ,and interesting.

In conclusion the experience of  3D printer was really fun and cool. I would definitely print something from a 3D printer again. The tips of the cat ears were not really done too well because the edges of the ears were not as pointy. Other than that, the object I printed was really successful.

Reasons why to purchase this novel: The heroine in this book is unusual from other female protagonists perceived in novels as she is strong-willed and ambitious. I find it delightful to find a novel with a female protagonist, who is strong. This novel also offers an unexpected plot twist that has shocked many readers judging from the reviewers.

2.       The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir by Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich

Genre: Crime, Law, Thriller, Young Adult, Memoir, and Non-fiction

Reasons why to purchase this novel: This auto-biography is captivating to readers as it offers realistic views of real murder cases, and the challenges of a lawyer to defend the person who is accused of a murder. It offers excellent choice of language and shocks readers of how intense law can be. The author is a lawyer herself and wanted to pursue law because her own experience of sexual abuse and the fact that her father is a lawyer himself.

3.       Reflections for Sharing Dreams by Brock Tully

Genre: Non-fiction, Inspirational and Poetry

Reasons why to purchase this novel: This novel can motivate students at Fraser Heights Secondary School to pursue their dream. It is also very heart-warming, and can offer support to students, who are feeling down. In addition, this novel gives reader inspiration for others to open up to others and use the kind part of their hearts.

4.       The Crown’s Fate by Evelyn Skye

Genre: Fantasy, and Historical

Reasons why to purchase this novel: This novel will not be a disappointment to young adult readers that enjoy books about magical wonders and are normally fast-paced. The author, Evelyn Skye, can convey powerful series while exhibiting a command of plot, and characterization.

5. Orange: The Complete Collection, Vol. 1 by Ichigo Takano

Genre: Science Fiction, Romance, Tragedy, and Graphic Novel

Reasons why to purchase this novel: This graphic novel is really popular in Japan and internationally. Orange Vol. 1 has won 5^TH place for the Goodreads Graphic Novel 2016 Awards, and it touches the powerful issues such as suicide.

6.  A Thousand Boy Kisses by Tillie Cole

Genre: Romance, Tragedy, and Contemporary

Reasons why to purchase this novel: This romance novel touches the hearts of many readers, and is found to be a tearjerker. This novel is recommended to readers that have liked Fault in the Stars, and A Walk to Remember.

7. Adulthood Is a Myth by Sarah Andersen

Genre: Humor, Graphic Novel and Non-fiction

Reason why to purchase this novel: Readers have appreciated this graphic novel, and also delivers powerful messages. This graphic novel also has hilarious illustrations, and a sense of humor.

Lib Science # 9: Libraries in the News

Are Libraries a thing in the past?
1. When did you last use the public library?

The last time I used a public library was in the middle of March. I was there to study with my friends and check out books that I was interested in.

2. McTernan’s four arguments for closing public libraries:

• The local library does not advanced technology and the computers are slow. 
• Is not the only place for an international network of literature. Computers and second-hand bookshops have access to international networks of literature.
• Is not the only place to revise and study. Everybody has a desk at home. 
• Is not only the place that has access to information. The Internet has all the information we need.

Read “Libraries have Thrived, despite technological developments” by British Columbia Library Association board of directors member Michele Wong.

1. What are some of the reasons Wong gives to prove that libraries are relevant today?

• lots of people visit the library. 30 million people haves visited public libraries in the past year, which is a 10 percent increase from 2009
• provides internet to people in society that do not have it at home
• gave others inspiration to be interested in forms of literature by having an increased amount of available information in libraries
• allows groups to meet up

2)  What are some of the services provided to the public through libraries?

• allows groups to come together for projects or business partners to conduct their business
• gives citizens to have a studious and comfortable environment to sit down and study

3) What do you think she means when she says “libraries are one of the society’s great equalizers?”

• gives all citizens access to responsive services without being judged regardless of their background

Editorial:

The article that McTernan wrote is easily disputable, and his points are not relatable to others that care and support public libraries. McTernan is prime minister that was once a librarian himself and had a Master degree in Library Science. However, his career as a librarian ended in the year of 1994. As a student who cares for libraries, McTernan’s points can be easily argued against.

McTernan argues that public libraries should be shut down because he believes that barely anyone goes to the public libraries anymore. This is not true as I have never have seen a library empty and have seen lots of visitors reading or writing their reports, and studying. The public library is a comfortable and pleasant place to study and write reports because of its welcoming and peaceful community. McTernan also argues that citizens do not need to go the library because they have a desk at home. Some people in society are less fortunate and unable to study with their inadequate studying utensils at home. The library provides service to its visitors such as homework help and counseling. Less unfortunate people will be able to go the library for these services and have the adequate supplies to study. Also, some citizens are unable to concentrate at home because of loud environments. Libraries are often are quiet and allows their visitors to concentrate.

Hence, McTernan makes an argument that libraries are not the only place where there is an international network of literature and suggests that the internet or second-hand bookstores can also provide these services. This statement is arguable because some citizens do not have access to the internet to reach other sources of information. Also, some assignments need other sources than the internet such as print sources and the internet does not provide these services. Second-hand bookstores provide these services but the books there can’t be borrowed for free. Libraries allow their visitors to borrow books for free.

Public libraries should be existent and not be shut down as they can motivate others to read literature and have others enjoy literature. As a young adult that has respect to public libraries, I do not agree with McTernan's viewpoints.

Technology and Libraries
1. Have you been to the Surrey Central Library?

Yes, I have been at the Surrey Central Library. Some meetings of my former youth group were held there so I went to help organize events.

2. Describe the ways in which the new Surrey Public Library is similar to Fraser Height’s library? How are the two libraries different?

Similarities:

• Having contests and prizes to win
• Access to internet and a wide range of books
• More place to study than area of where books are placed
• A news section and magazine section

      Differences:

• The Surrey public Library is bigger and has an upstairs level
• Surrey Public Library has more space to study than Fraser Heights Library

3. What is North Vancouver’s Waldorf School doing differently from other schools in the lower mainland?

• Restricts and bans the use of internet or technology in all classrooms of Elementary Schools

4. Should Fraser Heights follow the Waldorf school model?

I believe that Fraser Heights should not use the Waldorf School model because banning any form of technology will cause restrictions to research. Many assignments and projects in Fraser Heights require research and banning technology will hinder this. The internet has a wide range of sources including primary sources that are normally difficult to find in print sources. Some information needed to support a student’s points is only accessible on the internet. The information on the internet is summarized more clearly and has trustable evidence from famous scientists and branches of reports. In other words, technology can widen our range of information for research assignments, and projects. Thus, the Waldorf school model was designed for children in elementary schools. The students in Fraser Heights are teenagers or young adults so they do not require this system. Teenagers are old enough or mature to manage their own time and will not cause technology to be a distraction to their studies. In addition, teachers use technology in high school to help their students to better visualize or understand concepts. Videos or informational documentaries are only found on the internet and were found extremely helpful to students to deepen their understanding. Therefore, Fraser Heights should not follow this model as there are more pros of not following this Waldorf School model.

How does this article relate to libraries:

This article relates to the use of libraries because Little Free Libraries are a type of library used to make the community friendlier. Lately, a librarian in Toronto has filed a complaint about these libraries because she believes that these libraries are not specifically libraries from having no citizen borrow books from there. Little Free Libraries is a non- profit organization to have citizens that are less fortunate to have access to books. A senior in Fraser Heights Secondary School has organized and has registered a Little Free Library in the neighbourhood of Fraser Heights near Erma Stephenson with the help of the City of Surrey and the members of the Local Development Community Club. These type of libraries are often in well-educated and high-class neighbourhoods. These libraries function differently than school and Surrey Public Libraries as they are a lot smaller and have a give and take policy. Therefore, this article relates to libraries as it discusses a type of library.

Canadian dollar falls in face of U.S. softwood lumber duties

Summary: On the Tuesday of April 25th, the value of Canadian has dropped significantly because of the United State’s decision to impose a range of tariffs on Canadian lumber. The Canadian dollar has dropped to the small amount of 73.45 cents USD according to the reports of the World Bank of Canada. Canada’s economy is reliant on the trade with the United States and the issues with lumber exports will cause issues like it has already done. The tariffs on lumber trade perhaps happened due to Americans’ unhappy reaction of Canada making the business of dairy farmers in Wisconsin very difficult.

Personal Response/ Reflection:

 I believe that this issue can bring a huge toll on Canada’s economy due to the fact that Canada is reliant on the trade with the United States of America. Even there are beliefs that “diplomatic missteps are possible”, this is not the “prelude to a breakdown in relations between the two nations.” There are beliefs that the North American Free Trade Agreement(NAFTA) will be affected as well. Scientists shocked by Stunning Discovery in Antarctica

Summary: 

Scientists came across a stunning discovery in Antarctica as they noticed that melting of the ice shelf is occurring at a quicker pace. According to the journal, "Journal", scientists found that there was a huge amount of melted ice shelf water flowing in the area of Antartica that was unexpected. Global is an extreme issue that is happening due to fossil fuels and human activity. Rising temperatures will cause the Nansen ice sheet ( 30 miles long and 10 miles wide) to melt if rising temperatures will continue to occur. The extensive melting of the icebergs indicates this issue. Scientists report that will be future reports of these systems react to global warming.

Personal Response/ Reflection:

The indications of global warming and climate change have been obvious this year as there were intense snowfalls and changing weather patterns.  Melting of ice glaciers in Antartica is another sign of global warming and this issue can extreme if not paid attention to. It would cause an "influence on rising sea levels." Rising sea levels have been shown in China as some areas are flooded. Lots of simple gestures could be made to solve to issue but the society is still ignoring this issue despite the severe consequences. I believe that the society should be more attentive this issue so global warming will halt gradually. Alternate of fossil fuels can be used to help solve this issue.

Comic Reflection

For the Comic Strip Assignment, it was a fun and creative project to partake in but this project had required lots of work and time to complete. From being a person that has trouble with technology, I found it a little difficult to complete this project as I had to play around with a new software that I normally didn’t use and I had to take some time to get used to it. I found it troublesome to insert the pictures from the internet into the frames of the comic strip as the software, Comic Life, did not manually do this for me. I had to adjust the size of the picture to fit in the frames perfectly, and I found this a bit annoying to do because I believed that software would adjust the picture size itself. Sometimes, the software zoomed in the picture I had chosen and cut off the important content of the picture. This especially made me frustrated as I had to remake the picture the same size of the boxes. In order to make the picture the same size of the boxes, I screenshotted the picture to make the size small and cut off unimportant content. Although the process of inserting the pictures in the frames was time-consuming, I found it fun to insert dialogue into my comic as it made my comic more interesting and brought some life into it. Comic Life was user-friendly for the templates as it offered many templates that I thought was suitable for my comic. I had to edit the templates sometimes because of the picture sizing problem.

I believe the idea of using comic strips to portray well-understanding of course material is ideal for courses such as Humanities/ English and Social. In the below, there will be three example of projects used in Humanities 8, Socials 11 and Socials in the order of comic strips.

Humanities 8: There will be Wolves Novel Project
Project Description: Your task of this project is to perform well-understanding of the novel by creating a comic strip of the novel, “There will be Wolves” for 10 chapters of the book. Remember to include the theme of the novel, and the climax of the novel. The comic strip should be visually-appealing and be evident of hard work and time spent on this assignment. The comic strip should also include the key elements of a novel(character, theme, plot, Types of Point of View, setting, conflict, and tone). Attach an outline to show your process.

Criteria/Assessment:

Reasons why that I made this assignment: I made this assignment for the students to understand the novel in depth and maybe help them memorize the key events in the book. This project can also help them to get ready for their test in the future for the novel.

This database gives information about health related aspects such as diseases, injuries, procedures, food and nutrition, sexual health, physical trauma, oral care, pregnancy, and parenting. The database will also be a great resource for research projects for health care. I would strongly recommend it for others that are having a future project about viruses and bacteria. The resources are reliable articles from popular magazines such as Men’s Fitness, Yoga Journal, Fit Pregnancy, and the Complete Guide to Prescription and Nonprescription drugs.  This site also provides others information about highlights about health. This database will be useful for courses like Food and Nutrition, Psychology, and health unit for Planning 10. 

2.Canadian Points of View

This database provides information about Aboriginal people, animal welfare, Crime and Punishment, and Culture in the perspective of Canada. The database would be great for research projects about Canada as it provides students information mainly about Canada and it deals with my aspects as well. Courses that this database could be used are Socials 9-11, Humanities 8, and Social Justice 12. This database gives others journal entries, articles, primary sources about Canada and the resources can be highly reliable for students to use.

This database gives students literary works, information about authors, full-text classics, and highlights about famous works and authors such as John Steinbeck. This literature database is recommended for students needing assistance with information about literary works and information about poets and authors. Classes including English 8-11 can use this database to research about authors and find recommendations for works.

This Encyclopedia gives information and regulations on many political aspects including Laws of British Columbia, Historical Supreme Court Rules, Act/Ministry Responsibilities, Ministerial Orders, Bills, Orders In Council, Consolidated Provisions in Force, Proclamations, Corporate Registry Notices, Regulations Bulletins and Indexes, Defunct Regulations, Rules of Court and Related Enactments, Directives and Orders, and Expropriation Compensation Board. Courses such as Socials 11 can use this encyclopedia to learn about the government as it is a database specially designed for information about the government. This site can help students with politic terms and learn the government regulations in Canada. It is advised to use this site for government research projects.

It is strong advised to use this website for ideas for current events around the world as it could provide others information about the trending news. This database can also be used for research projects for Science 9 to 11 as it provides information on a large range of science-related aspects such as eukaryotes.

The qualities of being organized and friendly makes a great Library Learning Commons assistant. A library needs to well organized with fiction books in alphabetical order by the author’s last name and non-fiction books organized by the Dewey Decimal System. Librarian assistants need to be skilled at organizing to make this happen to make the library have a nice environment for students and visitors to relax and study in. A friendly librarian assistant can make the library a bright place and help students to get a well-suited book for themselves. Similarly, I am a friendly and nice person and my strength is my caring personality. I allow myself help students find books they desire. For example, I have helped a student find the book “The Alchemist” when he had trouble finding it. Also, I have been great at organizing the shelves of the library. I have shelved books in the right places and re-organized books if they were misplaced. On this Tuesday, I had found books in improper order in the non-fiction area and I have re-organized them. I believe that library assistant also needs to be careful and diligent so they don’t misplace books and can keep the library organized.

2.What are your weaknesses in this class and why? How can you improve?
My weakness in this class is perhaps my strength because I find it difficult to carry items that are heavy and I go through the trouble to carry things sometimes due to a weak shoulder. Last year, I have injured my left shoulder by studying for the Socials 11 provincial. I probably put too much tension to make this happen. Maybe, I will go to a bone therapist in the future to make my shoulder fully recover to solve this issue. I could also exercise more and use my upper strength more to make carrying items easier.

3.What have you enjoyed doing? What have you found difficult/frustrating?What have you learned this far?
I have enjoyed organizing books and working at the front desk. I find it enjoyable to help others check in and check out books. I have found carrying things troublesome and tiring due to my lack of strength and an injured shoulder. From this course, I have learned the origins of the Dewey decimal system and ten classes and divisions of the system.

4.What are some ideas you have for making our Library Learning Commons even better? Provide at least three and explain them fully. Post to your blog.

Some ideas to make the library even better are to have coloured printer, more charging electric outlets, and maybe insert an area where newspapers could be put or read.

A coloured printer could help students make more visually appealing posters and can print out colourful images. Some students find it troublesome for them to not find access to a coloured printer when they need it.

More changing electric outlets could let more students charge their phones and laptops as they study. It would be troublesome for a student to have to change places to get to an electric charging outlet. Students would probably find it better if they were accessible to an outlet anytime.

A place where newspapers could be put could maybe allow students to be more aware of the events happening in the world or keep them updated on the current events in BC or other places.

Commentary:

Ernest Hemingway was an American author and journalist, born in the village Oak Park in Illinois, on the date of July 21, 1899.  He had written articles for his high school newspaper about sports, which was named “Trapeze and Tabula" and went to work for a newspaper company right after his graduation. He was renowned for the books named “A Farewell to Arms" and “The Old Man and the Sea." His novel “ A Farewell to Arms" was based on his grueling and painful experiences as an ambulance driver in World War One and after a tragic heartbreak, and the other novel “ The Old Man and the Sea" had won the 1953 Pulitzer Award. Hemingway had won the Nobel Prize in Literature in the year of 1954. Even though Hemingway was a successful author and journalist, he had suffered from depression and high blood pressure. Unfortunately, he had passed away by committing suicide on the date of July 2, 1661.

In his years of being alive, he may have said “ there is no friend as loyal as a book" in dedication for his love of reading books. The following quote means that books are loyal friends because they will never abandon or betray a person. A book will always stay in your life unless a person sells it or gives it away to someone else. In addition, a novel can entertain a person and catch a person's attention by an interesting story or type of literature. This certain quote caught my attention and stood out from other quotes about books because I could easily relate to this as I am an avid reader myself. I have read numerous books during my lifetime and viewed books as my friends. There has never been a single time that a novel had betrayed me. I will keep reading books and types of literature in my spare time. Therefore, reading will always be my loved hobby.
